Why bother with compressing fusion fuel?

Allocating one million cubic meters of volume for fuel tanks is not problematic for ships that are described as over a kilometer long.

When detonated in space where there is no medium to absorb energy, the effects should be an inverse square function.

Yeah, you are right, the surface area is an r^2 function.
