Makeing money is often a case of finding a way to make something for less cost, as long as the quality is still there. The Haupman empire covers a lot of things. He has interstellar passenger ships, some of them armed. He builds warships, he builds weapons, he builds freighters. He operates freighters (he might or might not have built them in his own yards but he runs profitable companies. He probably is a partner or minority owner in all sorts of companies scattered through SL space, even controling some of them fully though networks of partnerships and corporations on a hundred planets.

One question about how bad a hit the Haupman Cartel (and related entities) took would be how much was self-insured? Even if very little was, the destruction caused by OB could have destroyed any number of insurance companies such that some claims will never be paid.

It is not like Haumpan has been a problem citizen for Manticore. He is tough, competitive and a lot of other things, but he is also realistic and has a lot of connection which he can use to recover. That recovery is also going to be slanted to improving and bolstering Manticore and it's recovery. It is still the place with the access to a majority of the shipping routes and a massively productive ecomeny which has gown with the spectacular increase in the size of the Empire.

Klaus has lots of faults, but the old pirate also has lots of characteristics to admire including basic honesty and the ability to admit it when he is wrong when his nose is rubbed in it hard enough. I think that over time, the cartel will be just fine.

Self insured or not insured? Hauptman is too honest not to carry insurance. His other shareholders would be too exposed without insurance. So if he is self-insured, then he has enough uncorrelated assets set aside to fund rebuilding the facilities he lost in Oyster Bay. RFC posted about insurance companies and how they had enough to cover rebuilding. Likely they need capital infusion to stay in business, but the can fund rebuilding the private sector owned parts of the stations.

Not to disturb your rest, but Raul(sp) will inherit Honor's shares in Skydomes and thus 70% or so of Haupman's finacial empire as well. With Prolong, it's not likely that we'll see the result, but eventually Honor's heirs will own the entire Honorverse -- or at least a controlling interest. :D

Actually, we can have no idea of what will really happen. Stacey Haupman might outlive Honor, and that could mean a change in wills. She could marry or not but have a child or several. Conditions could change.

Add to that prolong. Both she and Honor are in their sixties and liable to live at least another sixty or more. Talk about possibilities of change.

And who knows what would happen to Raoul. He could be killed in combat, etc.

There will be many changes. Who knows? Maybe Manticore will go socialist? That would make Eric Flint very happy.

There was one point in storyline when the curve ball was thrown with Honor and Stacey becoming such good friends that one of my Cupid arrows was feeling rather antsy.

Stacey could always end up extending the Harrington household. Three of a kind is a good hand, but two-pair is even better. Joining the marriage would put paid to the final resolution of the Hauptman fortune. Who else has any hopes of ever understanding the filthy rich Princess?

'Course, poor, rotten, lucky old Hamish if so.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Even more fun. Just imagine the wealth in one family. And, who knows, after Hamish dies VERY happy, perhaps they'll find a younger hubby.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Talk about brokering a real power marriage.

In that case, Hamish better either have access to Honorverse viagra, an implant or both. I can see Emily heading him off at the pass with her chair while he's trying to escape the bedroom on his knees "Get back in there you wimp! We need more kids to fill this Haven!"

Of course, as is the nature of polyamorous relationships, Stacey and Honor may form a marriage and shut Hamish and Emily completely out of their bedroom or at least out of Stacey's. Just saying.

All too true. Certainly possible. Although—since legally and traditionally—one marries for good or for bad, for better or for worse, for Hamish or for Honor. Which would give Hamish grounds for a divorce testifying that he only consented to the marriage thinking he'd be able to burn his wick in both ends.

Emily does not, it seem, partake of sex any more. Back down the line, she talks about that with Honor.

And if Stacey joins the marriage, she would be agreeing to be married (that is, to have sex) with Hamish.

She would also be agreeing to have sex with Honor. It's a marriage. Everyone is married. I would imagine that Grayson wives share this same sex benefit as well. Several wives and one tired husband makes Jill an ill pill simply waiting her turn.

ISTR that passage regarding Emily's disinterest as well. But that was before the addition of Honor. Why can't Emily have a renewed interest in sex? Before, there was no way she could participate with Hamish. She couldn't even give pleasure. With a woman it would be different. Her chair could have a vibrate feature installed mimicking the old washers of the 70's. No wonder women enjoyed doing the laundry back then.

"Emily, for some reason I crave our chats nowadays."

I think there is some issue with permanent nerve damage + Emily, like Honor, does not respond to regen therapies. No nerve impulses = no pleasure center stimulus.

Also they seem to be rewriting the marriage contract, At least that is the theological ruling for changing the marriage contract between Emily and Hamish to allow Honor to marry them. At what point is it rape for Stacey to not be in love with Hamish yet be required to "have relations" with him? THAT is the point of polyamory: One person in a marriage being in lve with someone else and having the freedom to live in both relationships. Which does not imply a quid pro quo sexual relationship with the other marriage partner; but, yes the other also having the right to partner(s) as well.
