I have both sets of software and understand
precisely what you mean. Even using SolidWorks is
an iffy proposition. Plus you(RFC) need to leave
a lot up your sleeve and of course story comes
first.

I am honored that you responded to a post of mine.
That I also got a Tum-te-tum-te-tum made me feel
that I had fully arrived in a forum sense.
BTW I was not fishing for information so much wanting to
make sure he got his, and the sooner the better.

On another note, we talked a bit when you were at
BorderLands books in San Francisco,. You mentioned
using NBOS's mapping software, which I see in the
Safehold maps. Do you use their software for you star
mapping for the Honorverse ?

Yes and no. The original Honorverse maps were done by hand on graph paper in 1989/1990 when electronic mapping software was, um . . . unavailable. In fact, Honor Harrington was born before Facebook or Twitter or even the World Wide Web.

Since that time, the maps have been transferred to an electronic format, using NBOS, but still strictly two-dimensional. There are plans afoot to (eventually) convert the existing maps into true three-dimensional electronic maps, but that is going to require a lot of approximating and filing to fit given the limitations of the "tech" available to me when the original, core maps were created.

I wrote a piece of software that used computer vision (OpenCV) on scanned maps to build my current database of stars in Honorverse. There was some manual massaging done on the data like reconciling different maps and adapting the different scales.

Currently I have ~850 different systems in my database and I know how long it takes to go through and just verify each one, and I can only imagine how much more time you have to spend on each system to add information for true 3d positions.

Can not wait to see what the MWW has planned for him. Should be interesting to see how he gets exposed. Before or After something big.

My hope is that he gets set up and fed a lot of rope.

An awful lot of havenites are more than just distrustful of Manticorans. As will also be the case in Mesa.

Precisely, talk about muddied waters...

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."
