Everything inside the compensator volume is in free fall, the 1g part is provided by the grav plates.

Yep, we are told that in IIRC OBS but it's also seen in the Manticore Ascendant series where you've got ships with impeller drive using spin sections for gravity because grav plates are too new to be universally fitted.

So JohnRoth's thought sounds like it might make logical sense on first glance it doesn't match how RFC decided the Honorverse would work.
