Precedence - At Pearl Harbor, the USS Cassin and USS Downs were in Dry Dock #1 with USS Pennsylvania, the Battleship got out with little more than a scratch and was sent to Seattle for a quick refit, the Cassin and Downs were not so lucky, both of them were heavily hit and knocked off their pylons, both hulls were wrecked, then flooded when the Pennsylvania was evacuated. The US Navy built 2 brand new hulls from scratch in California, all the fittings (guns engines etc...) for both ships were salvaged from the wrecks, transported by freighter to California, and systematically installed into the new hulls. the two ships went on to fight the Japanese - not as "new" ships but just "repaired" the old hulls were scraped - so there is precedence for this - the hull can be replaced and it's still the "same" ship. (this would go for Texas too, if someone wanted to restore her to service - at high expense
but do-able).
Cairo's a warship and a "Museum ship" so that counts too. :P

Almost only counts in Horseshoes and Nuclear Weapons. I almost got the Hand-Grenade out the window does not count.

Thanks shipmate, I didn't know about the Cairo.

Using the "logic" of replacing the missing or rotted out hulls we could probably "resurrect" at least two more ironclads including the CSS Neuse in Kinston NC. And then there is the CSS Hundley submarine under preservation in Charleston SC.

There probably are several other Civil War wrecks waiting discovery or recovery around the country or just off the coasts but these (above) are probably the last that can be recovered in some kind of recognizable condition, though I've been proven wrong many times before.

Clive Cussler has documented at least one other Civil War wreck that was destroyed by a river dredge, USS Carondelet IIRC, just hours before he could pinpoint its location on the bottom of the Mississippi. The dredge really did a number on the wreck, only a few battered artifacts and bits of timber were recovered and identified.

IIRC, about all that's left of the original USS Constitution is [a portion of] her keel. All the rest of her has been rebuilt over the centuries. Yet she is still considered the oldest commissioned warship afloat (HMS Victory being in dry dock makes her only the oldest commissioned warship).

About 15% to 20% of Constitution is original 1797 timber, most of it keel and live oak framing. And yes, she IS considered to be the same ship because there was never any intent to tear her apart and build a new hull with the same name. Like any ship of any era she needs maintenance and repairs. She has been in continuous, documented existence since her launching in 1797.

There was a lot of discussion and angst over the Constellation sloop of war moored in Baltimore because for quite a while people outside of the Navy were considering her to be the original 1797 frigate of that name.

The frigate was dismantled and burned at the Gosport Navy Yard in Portsmouth VA (modern Norfolk Naval Shipyard) in the 1850's, while this hull (1854) was being built in the same yard. But while some of the live oak "knees" and timbers MIGHT have been salvaged from the frigate for installation in the sloop there is no way the two are the same ship.

This sloop is actually somewhat larger in length and beam and heavier than the 1797 frigate and while she is rated at only 22 or 24 guns vs 36 or 38 for the frigate her armament was heavier and a good deal more powerful. She was the very last pure sail powered warship built for the US Navy.

The only things she really has in common with the frigate is her name Constellation and her nickname "The Yankee Racehorse" because like the frigate she was FAST, able to overtake even the fast slave ships that ran from the African coast to the Caribbean, something few other warships (European or American) could manage.

So, after 50 pages, what exactly DID we decide was the last use for captured Sollie SDs?

Oh, come on. They can be used to sink the economy of a lot of Presidents-for-life. At least the ones that have a military-industrial complex and would fall for being gifted a white elephant.

So what are they going to do with them? Here's my idea: give them back to the Sollies. Imagine the effect on Sollie public opinion. "We don't need or want this trash, ours are way better." Do this very publicly, then sit back and laugh. Would the ISLN dare to not recommission them? How much trained manpower and resources would that suck up?
