Isn't that pretty much what an SD(P) does?

Which makes kzt's point even more ironic and satirical.

We moved past Hornblower in Space a long time ago. That's where the story started, but it is now way past that.

New ships. Finished all the HoS light cruisers, and started on heavy cruisers earlier today. As with the DD class ships, there are ships from different generations, and the differences are similar to those on the DD's

Spent a good portion of the day making a template (three, actually) to liven up the images a bit. It took me so long because I don't (didn't) know how to do any of what I did in Paint Shop Pro, and there was a lot of trial and error, as well as some back and forth between myself and other people in BuNine who know more about this sort of thing than I do.

The side view group shots for the destroyers and the light cruisers were all taken with the exact same settings, so you can do a side-by-side comparison. It probably won't be that way when I do the same for the heavy cruisers, though, but I will still include the Star Knight as a reference (in fact, the SK will be in all group shots I do in the future for size reference purposes).

Speaking of the SK, since I'm on CA's, I think I'm going to rebuild her, as making these past few renders has highlighted a few issues with the current SK. There's artifacting in some areas, and I want to rebuild her to more closely match the lineart in HoS. I know what's causing the artifacts, so that won't be a big issue to fix, and I want to lighten her up a bit - she's pretty polygon-heavy, and the way I've been doing the newer ships should reduce her ploycount quite a bit - maybe 50% - which will make for quicker renders.

This will be the fourth time I've built her from scratch. This particular rebuild will be externals only (the current version has a few decks and other interior stuff that I'm going to leave out for this series of renders), but will be done with an eye towards expanding to include interiors later on.

Okay, enough of the boring text. Enjoy:

Maxx-Q will you be doing the LACs?

This one was on DA:

Showing a shrike nose art an all.

And a Kantna I did for my shipmates on GNS Covington before I got the boot:

The intention is to do all ships that have line art in HoS. Since there's a total of four illustrated LACs in there, those will be the ones I do. However, don't hold your breath waiting for them, as those are going to require some new techniques from me, and since they're all pretty different from one another, I can't "lift" bits from one to use on the other, like I have with the regular warships.

OTOH, I will probably do a very basic, blocked-in LAC to use as a size reference for making the CLACs, so that'll help speed up the process.

I'm not sure if I'll do any nose art, though. Probably not, as I've been doing all the other ships without their names and numbers.

I wanted to thank you for providing these images. I really suck at converting textual descriptions into actual 3D mental models. :)

It really helps to have something visual for my mind to work with.

No problem. Until I got to the books that had the art in them, I couldn't figure out how they looked either. I just knew they didn't come anywhere close to what the early covers looked like.

Make way for the heavy cruisers!

So... I just checked, and it's been nine days since I posted the light cruisers. Not bad, considering I was gone all weekend with no computer access.

I have rebuilt the Star Knight/Fearless CA for the fourth time now, and while it's not as detailed or complex as the last version, it *looks* much cleaner and nicer. I managed to fix every issue I had with it, and improve some areas. I've also moved the boat bays somewhat, making them centered rather than moved aft somewhat as on my earlier version.

Those of you who have House of Steel can make a comparison and note that the broadside weapons port configuration is somewhat different than what is shown in the book. During the building process, I noted that with needing twelve tubes per broadside, it was impossible to place them as depicted in the book, so I went back to the weapons layout of my previous SK, with one exception: the lower weapons deck is now interspersed with the upper, instead of aligned.

In the group shots, you can just barely make out Maxx standing in roughly the same spot on all three ships - near the green running light on the forward hammerhead.

I guess that's it for now. These will be my last renders for a couple-three weeks (or more), as I am moving to South Carolina Friday to start a new job, and it will probably take me a bit to get things set up and running again. I'll still be on 'til maybe tomorrow evening, as the comp will be the very last thing I tear down and pack up, so if you want to say anything, get it in quick

Luck with the new job J. O. (Maxx-Q.) Want Maxx-Q's real name visit one of the renders and read it, use the magnifying glass plus key for larger look? ;)

Here is a thumb nail peak at the belly of a Star Night, in the full sized art you can clearly see the penances in the bays.

Holy stereotypes (Star Trek's Scotty) a ethnic Scott rendering ships for the Royal Navy in Bu-9, we'll have to swap Scottish jokes, laddie. ;)
