These remarks accompany the discussion of RMN medals, but are a separate topic.

There was an interesting staff study, perhaps mythical, allegedly due to the German General staff, which was said to have found an infallible predictor of which side would lose each war.

The side with the gaudier dress uniforms always loses.

It is not yet apparent that the Invincible Solarian League Navy actually lives up to this rule, but perhaps we have not yet seen Kingsford being summoned to testify to the Solarian League parliamentary object, and perhaps the author has not yet provided us with a description of the full dress uniform, white, with some pounds of gold brocade in the dress cape.

Borrowing from another author's universe here, but is there any truth to the rumour that the SLN is just beginning the process of issuing a new model skin suit? The main difference seems to be the new colour for the lower half - brown!

I thought that it was the side with the shorter hairstyle wins.

Athenians - Long hippy hair
Spartans - Trimmed hair in helmets
Spartans 1, Athenians 0

Cavaliers - Flowing locks
Roundheads - Short back and sides
Cavaliers 0, Roundheads 1

Vietnam, buzzcuts on both sides.
No score draw.

See?
Concept as mentioned in Red Dwarf

Add the Battle of Hastings to the list. Normans kept their hair short, too. The Anglo-Saxons wore it long.

Just to drag this up again, but apart from textev, there's this on former BuNine member Rob Graham's dA page:

It's three years old and probably changed by now, but it gives some indication.

Mike. :)

I was hoping that SLN uniforms for the women were Creten style until I read the description of Admiral Crandall.
