Yes and no. But for ten years it was like owning a chunk of Newport New Shipbuilding and Dry Dock from 1935-1945.

Good analogy. Plus it was mentioned in an earlier book that once your starting capital passes a certain point (and is invested properly) it keeps growing and building pretty much on its own.

It should have been insured to some extent.

The other thing is when Honor formally took her Steadholder's oath, she made it clear her primary obligations were to the Star Kingdom and those reservations were accepted by the Keys.

Given that Manticore has been attacked by the better part of 800 wallers in two battles and is now at war with the Solarian League, only the most entrenched of her enemies could protest. I'm sure most of them prefers her absent with a conveniently male regent - and at any rate, such a protest would be encroaching upon the Steadholder's privileges of autonomy, which virtually all of those enemies would be seeking to defend, lest Benjamin take any more of them away.

Unless there's some provision in the case of polygamy that all issue of the first wife take precedence over those of the second, they can't exactly "have him passed over".

I think it would be more of a matter of Raoul abdicating the lesser White Haven title to his sister while retaining the Harrington titles. He might even be able to do so in a way that leaves himself and his descendents in the succession after all of her descendents. That way the family keeps the extra vote in the (OSK) Lords, because Raoul can't have two votes in his own name. He can give Katherine his proxy and go hang out on Grayson though.

If the series goes long enough for such things, of course.

Sure. "I need to file a claim for the entire system GDP for the next 3 years. Umm, I see from the way you are backing away that this might be a bit of a problem..."
