-The Detweilers aren't the innermost circle of the Mesan Alignment at all; it turns out to actually be a clan of evil treecats with mind-control powers.

-The Grand Alliance and the Renaissance Factor will have to unite to fight Achuultani invading from the other side of settled space.

-The Manticorans will develop 30 million ton non-pod-laying SDs using grav plates rather than compensators that fire missiles armed with SD-sized grasers.

- Grand Alliance develops 80 megaton Supermonitors that carry and fire a squadron of SDs like missiles.

Now, why would one build a thing like that and what would be the purpose of SDs used as missiles? Well, that's why it won't happen.

It is not another clan. It is a subspecies. They are Romulo-cats.

One of the Alignment ship captains suffers an epiphany similar to Jack McBride. Knowing that most of the Alignment leadership (Detweilers, Planning Board, several innermost layers of the Onion) are on Darius, he takes his compensators off line along with the safety locks on the drive system and rams his ship at maximum acceleration into Darius.
That mostly leaves just a rat hunt for Alignment operatives and various Alpha, Beta and Gama line fragments such the RF leadership.

At the Mesa Alignment annual BBQ it turns out that Detweiler's personal assistant has added a large container of aconite to the BBQ sauce. Everyone dies.

Oh, sorry, that was Stirling that did that....
