Now if you want to buy cooperation from this treecat we have to talk shrimp and celery egg-rolls don't you know a Chinese cook or are they all Italian and Portuguese in Bean-Town? Mange: If Pokermind gets those two chantie that won't be to bad, I think, but if he gets hold of A Bottle of Rum I think I would cringe. As for being on the beach I know that, thought you might have lived on a space station!
As for Italian and Portuguese don't eat to much of that and I as to Bean-town no way I was stationed there and there's only one place worse and that's northern NJ, I'm talking mostly drivers here. (Stationed at Sandy Hook,NJ).
Now to the Chinese cuisine, I had that Last night including egg rolls, so you think we can make a deal.

By the way I live in NH in the start of the lakes region by the Maine border. We get lobstah here.

The Chief

Mange, <The Chief and I are stationed dirt-side on Grayson, he is teaching me to be a metal-biter what you two-legs call a machinist, and I get to clean the air ducts, lucky me. I was a stone-biter in my clan on Sphinx, and among the People I am Black Stone Biter. Why Bu-Per stationed a machinist and machinist helper with the legation on Grayson is beyond either the Chief or me, but you know the service the @#$%$# Navy sends you where the @#$%$# Navy thinks you're needed, or as the Chief puts it where the retarded desk ape pulls the top assignment of the stack when you name comes up, you know what ancient term REMF is.

<We make extra cash recording for Ronchco Records here, they say castrated calves make sweeter noises, but with a treecat accompanist the records sell, they say a treecat could sell air in a box on Grayson. And on Grayson they actually broadcasts ancient Television my favorite is the Honeymooners since I get dirty cleaning air ducts I like Ed Norton the character Art Carney plays. The Chief is portly, often sticks his foot in his mouth and wiggles his toes, just like Ralph Kramden played by Jackie Gleason, and is just as full of hot air.

Image

<Not to worry the Chief is superstitious and will steer clear of a song about the Flying Dutchman.

<Lobstah is New England for lobster, and a lobster is a large shrimp, true? And what is this 'Maple Syrup' the old Grayson Encyclopedia mentions coming from New Hampshire? This treecat loves shrimp and celery egg-rolls they grow Terran shrimp in tanks here.

<Oops got to run the Chief just flushed the head.>

As I was a walking down Paradise Street
Way aye blow the man down
A pretty young damsel I chanced for to meet.
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!

She was round in the counter and bluff in the bow,

So I took in all sail and cried, "Way enough now."
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down

So I tailed her my flipper and took her in tow
Way aye blow the man down

But as we were going she said unto me
Way aye blow the man down
There's a spanking full-rigger just ready for sea.
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down

But as soon as that packet was clear of the bar

Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!

It's starboard and larboard on deck you will sprawl
Way aye blow the man down

Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away

So I give you fair warning before we belay,
Way aye blow the man down
Don't ever take heed of what pretty girls say.
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!
References in the lyrics
Paradise Street is a street in Liverpool, England that was frequented by sailors whose ships had docked at the port. A traditional explanation of its origins is that the Black Ballers were fast packet ships of the American Black Ball Line that sailed between New York and Liverpool towards the end of the 19th century.
Sailors reached America about 4 weeks after leaving Liverpool and returned about 3 weeks later. The speedy journey meant that sailors were paid earlier than those on other lines making the Black Ball ships very popular.
Sailors were regularly beaten on these ships and being "blown down" was a man on the deck floor as a result

Farewell and adieu to you, Beowulfian Ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Beowulf;
For we've received orders for to sail for old Manticore,
But we hope in a short time to see you once more.

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,

We hove our ship to with the worm hole sou'west, boys
We hove our ship to, deep sorrow at the sight;
'Twas forty-five days since the treacherous attack,

Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;

The first land we sighted was the ruin of Hephaestus,
The Ruin of Yalta Crossing, Black Water Clan and Treecat innocence;
We sailed by smoking Hephaestus, by the ruined yards, and O'l Landing
We assumed stationary orbit over Old Landing to await the Bastards.

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred light years and more.

Then the signal was made for the grand fleet to fight,
And all hoped the enemy would surrender in the light,
But the missiles let go and ours in answer in a show stopper,
All spacers must cry at the carnage, the wrecked fleet a sight,

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred light years and more.

Now let ev'ry man drink off his full bumper,

Sorry to hear about your sight--hope it doesn't continue to deteriorate.

Nah, it's just that they seemed to be bunched and since you have the time and motivation, you get more in than many of us. But you know the topic, you enjoy the give and take, so for my .02 cents, keep on posting.

Now, as for the topic, I'm not good on Shanties, but there are a couple 'seafaring' songs I've tried to adapt to the Honorverse. Many here probably have not heard them before, so I'm attaching You Tube performances that you can listen to first.

ONE: Ghosts of Cape Horn by Gordon Lightfoot. This is about, as you might guess, the sailors and ships lost in the rounding of Cape Horn through the centuries.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VYC4eie2kU

So I adapted it to the Sachsen Wave, which also claimed it's share of ships:

All around the Sachsen Wave
Ships of the wall, ships of the brave
Those who knew they’d never be saved
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave
Fal deral da riddle de rum
With a rim dim diddy
And a rum dum dum
Hypering out beyond the grave
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave

See them all in sad repair
Demons dance everywhere
Gravity gales, tattered sails
And none to tell the tales

Come all of you rustic old space dogs
Who follow the great Southern Cross
You were riding the wave
The G’s ne’er forgave
When ya lost 'er one day
And you read all yer letters
From far systems away
Then you took them to the vacuum t’ween the stars

All around the Sachsen Wave
Ships of the wall, ships of the brave
Those who knew they’d never be saved
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave
Fal deral da riddle de rum
With a rim dim diddy
And a rum dum dum
Hypering out beyond the grave
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave

So come all you old space dogs from Gryphon
San Martin, Sphinx and the ‘Core
You were caught by the chance
Of a spacer’s last dance
It was not meant to be
And ya read all yer letters
Cried spacedock farewell
Then you took them to the vacuum t’ween the stars

All around the Sachsen Wave
Ships of the wall, ships of the brave
Those who knew they’d never be saved
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave
Fal deral da riddle de rum
With a rim dim diddy
And a rum dum dum
Hypering out beyond the grave
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave

Second is in the next message

Hutch wrote:OK, the Second one is called Northwest Passage by another Canadian named Stan Rogers, and about the efforts by men in the 1800's to find a sea route via Northwest passage above Canada--and the men, like Franklin, who died in the attempt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVY8LoM47xI

I adapted it to the time in history where the Hyperdrive was developed and perfected.

CHORUS: Ah, for just one time I would take the Hyper Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the distant stars;
Tracing one warm line through a void so wild and savage
And make a Hyper Passage to the stars.

Starward from the System edge 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The space route to the Galaxy for which so many died;
Seeking gold and glory, left their atoms in the rift
And a long-forgotten story as their gift. CHORUS

Six centuries thereafter, I take passage thru the Black
Following brave Kelso, where he went and ne’er came back
Watching systems rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard through the star lanes. CHORUS

And through the night, looking out the dome, my children at my breast
I think upon Joe Buckley, Warshawski and the rest
Who cracked the lightspeed ramparts and did show a path to ours
To race the roaring Grav-waves to the stars. CHORUS

How then am I so different from the first ones through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away.
To seek a Hyper Passage beyond the farthest land
To find there but the road back home again. CHORUS

And a third:

Hutch wrote:Number three was unplanned, but when I found the "Northwest Passage" by Stan rogers, I also noted he had done a song called "Barrett's Privateers", about Canadians during the War of 1812--and it was such a great song, I had to adapt it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMV34CwN ... re=related

In this case I made them Silesians, it seemed like a likely place where privateers would be found.

Oh, the year was 1858,
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
A letter of marque came from the Green
To the scummiest vessel I’d ever seen.

(CHORUS)
Goddamn them all!
I was told we’d cruise the stars for Mantie gold.
We’d fire no guns, shed no tears.
I’m a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett’s Privateers.

Well, Elcid Barrett cried the town
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
For forty brave crew all spacers who
Would make for him the "Antelope’s" crew

(REPEAT CHORUS)

The "Antelope’s" sloop was a sickening sight
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
Her impellers were old and her sail in rags
And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags

(REPEAT CHORUS)

On Founder’s birthday we put to space
("How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
It was fifty one days to the Chalice way
Working like madmen night and day

(REPEAT CHORUS)

On the seventy-sixth day we sailed again
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
When a bloody great Mantie hove in sight
With our cracked four lasers we made to fight.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

The Mantie lay low down with gold
("How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
She was broad and fat and slow to phase
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Then at length we stood 40K away
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
Our cracked four lasers made an awful din
But with one tractored LAC the Manti stove us in

(REPEAT CHORUS)

The Antelope shook and pitched on her side
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
Well Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the grazer carried off both me legs.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

So here I sit in my twenty-third year
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
It’s been six years since I hypered away
And I just made Halifax yesterday

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Hope you enjoyed the Music.

And finally my last finished one:

Sorry to hear about your sight--hope it doesn't continue to deteriorate.

Nah, it's just that they seemed to be bunched and since you have the time and motivation, you get more in than many of us. But you know the topic, you enjoy the give and take, so for my .02 cents, keep on posting.

Now, as for the topic, I'm not good on Shanties, but there are a couple 'seafaring' songs I've tried to adapt to the Honorverse. Many here probably have not heard them before, so I'm attaching You Tube performances that you can listen to first.

ONE: Ghosts of Cape Horn by Gordon Lightfoot. This is about, as you might guess, the sailors and ships lost in the rounding of Cape Horn through the centuries.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VYC4eie2kU

So I adapted it to the Sachsen Wave, which also claimed it's share of ships:

All around the Sachsen Wave
Ships of the wall, ships of the brave
Those who knew they’d never be saved
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave
Fal deral da riddle de rum
With a rim dim diddy
And a rum dum dum
Hypering out beyond the grave
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave

See them all in sad repair
Demons dance everywhere
Gravity gales, tattered sails
And none to tell the tales

Come all of you rustic old space dogs
Who follow the great Southern Cross
You were riding the wave
The G’s ne’er forgave
When ya lost 'er one day
And you read all yer letters
From far systems away
Then you took them to the vacuum t’ween the stars

All around the Sachsen Wave
Ships of the wall, ships of the brave
Those who knew they’d never be saved
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave
Fal deral da riddle de rum
With a rim dim diddy
And a rum dum dum
Hypering out beyond the grave
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave

So come all you old space dogs from Gryphon
San Martin, Sphinx and the ‘Core
You were caught by the chance
Of a spacer’s last dance
It was not meant to be
And ya read all yer letters
Cried spacedock farewell
Then you took them to the vacuum t’ween the stars

All around the Sachsen Wave
Ships of the wall, ships of the brave
Those who knew they’d never be saved
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave
Fal deral da riddle de rum
With a rim dim diddy
And a rum dum dum
Hypering out beyond the grave
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave

Second is in the next message

Hutch wrote:OK, the Second one is called Northwest Passage by another Canadian named Stan Rogers, and about the efforts by men in the 1800's to find a sea route via Northwest passage above Canada--and the men, like Franklin, who died in the attempt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVY8LoM47xI

I adapted it to the time in history where the Hyperdrive was developed and perfected.

CHORUS: Ah, for just one time I would take the Hyper Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the distant stars;
Tracing one warm line through a void so wild and savage
And make a Hyper Passage to the stars.

Starward from the System edge 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The space route to the Galaxy for which so many died;

The Beowulfian Ladies:
By CPO Poker Mind and SCF Mangy Fur

Farewell and adieu to you, Beowulfian Ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Beowulf;
For we've received orders for to sail for old Manticore,
But we hope in a short time to see you once more.

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred light years and more.

We hove our ship to with the worm hole sou'west, boys
We hove our ship to, deep sorrow at the sight;
'Twas forty-five days since the treacherous attack,
So we squared our shoulders revenge for to take.

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred light years and more.

The first land we sighted was the ruin of Hephaestus,
The Ruin of Yalta Crossing, Black Water Clan and Treecat innocence;
We sailed by smoking Hephaestus, by the ruined yards, and O'l Landing
We assumed stationary orbit over Old Landing to await the Bastards.

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;

Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred light years and more.

Now let ev'ry man drink off his full bumper,
And let ev'ry man drink off his full glass;
We'll drink and be jolly and drown melancholy,
And here's to the health of each true-hearted lass. (or 'soul')

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred light years and more.

BLOW THE MAN DOWN

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away

As I was a walking down Paradise Street
Way aye blow the man down
A pretty young damsel I chanced for to meet.
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!

She was round in the counter and bluff in the bow,
Way aye blow the man down
So I took in all sail and cried, "Way enough now."
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!

So I tailed her my flipper and took her in tow
Way aye blow the man down
And yardarm to yardarm away we did go.
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!

But as we were going she said unto me
Way aye blow the man down
There's a spanking full-rigger just ready for sea.
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!

But as soon as that packet was clear of the bar
Way aye blow the man down
The mate knocked me down with the end of a spar.
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!

It's starboard and larboard on deck you will sprawl
Way aye blow the man down
For Kicking Jack Williams commands the Black Ball.
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!

Barrett's Privateers, OBS edition:

Oh, the year was nineteen-four PD, HOW I WISH I WAS IN LANDING NOW!
A letter of orders came from the queen
To the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the stars for Havenite gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on Manticore’s pier
The last of Honor’s Volunteers

Oh, Honor Harrington cried the town, HOW I WISH I WAS IN LANDING NOW!
For twenty brave men all spacers who
would make for her the Fearless’s crew

God damn them all!

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on Manticore’s pier
The last of Honor’s Volunteers

HMS Fearless was a sickening sight, HOW I WISH I WAS IN LANDING NOW!
She'd a list to the port with impellers in rags
And the cook in scuppers with the staggers and the jags

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the stars for Havenite gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on Manticore’s pier

On the Queen's birthday we put to space, , HOW I WISH I WAS IN LANDING NOW!
‘twas 9 days to Basilisk, they say
Working like yard dogs all the way

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the stars for Havenite gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on Manticore’s pier
The last of Honor’s Volunteers

On the tenth day of our cruel exile, HOW I WISH I WAS IN LANDING NOW!
a bloody great Peep hove into sight
With our weak torpedoes we made to fight

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the stars for Havenite gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on Manticore’s pier
The last of Honor’s Volunteers

The Havenite lay low down with gold, HOW I WISH I WAS IN LANDING NOW!
She was broad and fat and loose in the stays
But to catch her took the Fearless two whole days

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the stars for Havenite gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on Manticore’s pier
The last of Honor’s Volunteers

Then at length we stood two cables away, HOW I WISH I WAS IN LANDING NOW!
Our Grav Lance made an awful din
But with one missile the Peeps stove us in

This one is Havenite, but The RMN can honor her own heroes with variants:

Original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uMHcko8pys

"The Republic's Man 'o War: Giscard's Death at Lovat"

On 15 May, in glory, before the stars and sun,
We formed the wall for action boys, at twelve o'clock begun
Brave Giscard to his men did say:
“The Lord will prosper us this day.
Present all missiles, fire away.”
On board the man of war.

Chorus (twice after each verse):
Let him die in peace, God bless you all,
On board a man of war.

So broadside to broadside our men and women died,
Like hailstones their LAC's all round our ships did fly
Our sidewalls were all shot away
Besides some thousand seen that fray
Was ill and wounded on that day
On board the man of war.

Despite the odds brave Javier stood to protect his men,
e'en as the ships or our great fleet were sunk or taken in.
Their missiles burst against our wall
but still he would not give in at all,
may Haven bless him, one and all
aboard a man of war.

But then our Lady President, in grief she shook her head:
"There is no reprieve, there is no relief, My Javier he is dead."
It was missiles from Harrington's wall
That caused our hero for to fall
Let him die in peace, God bless you all
On board the man of war.

And the merchants of our Republic when they did hear it so,
They said: “Come brothers, Spacers, to church now let us go.
There we will build a monument
for our hero, who by God was sent
And gave his life for our Haven
On board the man of war.”

Now our soldiers and sailors many noble deeds have done
While fighting in foreign many battles they have won.
If the vast abyss could witness there
Or the System of Lovat declare:
There is nought with Giscard did compare
On board the man of war.

Let's hope this glorious battle will surely bring a peace,
And that our noble Republic may flourish and increase.
Our ships from star to star go free and turn the hearts of our enemy.
To Giscard's death and victory, on board a man-of-war.

I was in the air force, but we, especially the fighter pilots, had our share of drinking songs.
These were my favorites. First is The Balls of O'Leary, which is a song about the lower anatomy of an Irish gentleman, sung to the tune The Bells of St. Mary.
My apologies to the ladies on the board.

The Balls of O'Leary

The balls of O'Leary
Are wrinkled and hairy
They sheen with a luster
Like the domes of St. Paul
The women would muster
To view that great cluster
They GASP and they STARE!
At the bloody great pair
Of O'Leeeeeeeaaaaaary's BAAAAAAAALLS!!!
O'Leary'ws HAAAAAIRY BAAAAAAALLS!

When I read Echoes of Honor where the LAC pilots aboard the H.M.S Minotaur having a "fighter jock" mentality, this song popped into my mind.

There Are No Fighter Pilots in Hell

There are no fighter pilots down in Hell
There are no fighter pilots down in Hell
The place is full of queers
Navigators, Bombadiers
But there are no fighter pilots down in Hell
