This story also includes the first adoption of a member of the House of Winton...

Ah, the plot thickens. Thank you!

Latent talents either exclusively within the domain of treecats, or within treecat-human bonds.

No, people didn't miss that. There was quite a bit of discussion about the incident with Raoul. But the conclusion was not that treecats are starting to exhibit unknown abilities, but that humans are (or at least the Harrington line).

From the short story "With One Stone" in The Service of the Sword anthology:

"Good," Hemphill said softly. "Then allow me make myself even clearer. You acted out of loyalty to Captain Harrington and the Fearless. I appreciate that. But loyalty must always be balanced with the larger perspective. Here we had a chance—a small one, admittedly, but still a chance—to feed Haven a line of disinformation that could have tied up its time and resources for years to come."

She lifted her chin. "And no matter what you, Captain Harrington, or anyone else aboard Fearless ever do with your careers, you will never accomplish anything that could possibly pay that kind of dividend for the Star Kingdom. Understood?"

Really, Admiral Hemphill? Nothing that Harrington will ever do with her career will pay that kind of dividend? Would you like some ketchup with that side of crow?

Oh, give my baby girl a break! From the perspective that she had at the time, Sonja was absolutely justified in what she said. She could have had no way of knowing that Honor Harrington was going to join the ranks of Edward Saganami and Ellen D'Orville. *pets Sonja*

And I've lured rose back! You're correct in her having no idea that Honor would gain such stature but she was a bit melodramatic in her opinion of the lost opportunity to misdirect Haven. She even admits, in her own thoughts anyway, that the misdirection wouldn't have lasted very long or really been that fruitful; she just wanted to put the fear of God into Cardones for disobeying a direct order the way he did.

Don't worry. I think Sonja's an awesome character. All of her technological achievements are mind-boggling.

From "Let's Dance" in the anthology In Fire Forged:

"After all," [Allison] smiled hugely through a haze of tears, "we're the ones who named you Honor."

Changer of Worlds
A people who heard one another's thoughts and tasted one another's mind glows could not possibly have put all potential areas of conflict off limits, however, and outside those which had been sanctified by iron custom, the People addressed one another with a frankness which would have been devastating in any mind-blind society.

It would not be devastating in Terran's mind blind society.

It would be tantamount to genocidal.

Was that discussion in a particular thread? I really missed out and would like to read over it. It is very insightful to conclude that it represents a possible evolution in the Harrington Clan's abilities. And probably a more logical one. I missed that. Thanks!
