Honor's reaction to The Statue outside the Conclave of Steadholders. Remember? The 12-meter tall one that the Graysons refuse to take down?
Maybe a bit overwrought? After all, the statue (or "Statue!") itself is only 4 meters tall....

Imagined conversation:
Admiral [noting yet another Manty tech surprise]:
XO, what's the budget for the ONI?
Vice Admiral: I don't recall exactly, sir. Several billion quatloos.
Admiral: ... What do you suppose they did with all that money?

To be fair, I wonder what Nelson would think of the statue of him at Trafalgar? the Column is 45 odd metres, and the statue 5.5M....
She's probably at least partly justified at being embarrassed..... But only partly. :D

Between her and Mike Henke, it seems Tom is just made to be joked with.

From the end of "Changer of Worlds":
"Look at her!" she said softly, and chuckled. "Sleepy as she is, you'd think she'd been out changing the world or something!"

Is it possible for someone to tell me where this is from?
One that I haven't read yet? The anthologies?

Or did I just miss it somehow in one of the mainstream novels?

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

I like it wher RFC uses a "One-liner quite" that he puts in the mouths of his characters.

Such as where Honor adds " . . . and many cheerful facts about the square on the hypotenuse" as a throwaway line that her audience completely misses

Indeed, and I posted nearly a whole page of lines from that story here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5123

If you haven't read it yet, cthia, you owe it to yourself to do so.
