Alas, Rose, we see little of Eloise in this book. I trust you will not be brokenhearted, but she's back in Nouveau Paris doing those Presidential things only she can do.

We do meet a destroyer captain I think you'll like, though. By Honor's own estimate, she does a better job against worse odds than Honor managed with Fearless against Thunder of God at Grayson.

Oh, and romance blooms --- perhaps --- for a certain youthful officer.

On the one hand, UGH MY BABY I'M GONNA MISS HER SO MUCH!!

On the other hand, "very little" doesn't =/= "none at all", and I'd rather have her tucked safely away in Nouveau Paris where she (hopefully) can't get herself hurt than risking her neck on the front lines.

As to the other news: ::high-pitched squeals of excitement:: I cannot WAIT to meet this destroyer captain, and I'm racking my brains as to who the 'youthful officer' could be....... :D

Of course, even when you do, my defenses are designed to stand up to Manticoran missile fire, aren’t they? And, trust me, I’m one hell of a lot faster than anything you’ve got. You can’t find me, you can’t hit me, you can’t catch me, and you damned well can’t outrun me.

:o

Is there a such thing as a snippet on steroids?! Well there is now!

The upcoming book is worth it to me for this passage alone! The mad wizard got his groove back!

Thanks-a-million!

Interesting. A Havenite ship commanded by a young officer. Probably nothing bigger than a BC, and quite possibly a CA or smaller if it needs to play high speed hide and seek with SLN BCs (an SD(P) seems way more likely to be a big visible presence beyond their effective missile range and rain down unstoppable MDM death upon any too foolish to surrender) [edit: missed that RFC's earlier post talked about it being a destroyer captain]

I guess we're finally seeing what Foraker was working on for the escorts - because up until this point I don't recall seeing any real mention of new ship designs beyond the SD(P)s, CLACs, and LACs. But nothing prior to the ceasefire would have been capable of standing up to Manticoran missile swarms, at least not from their modern designs (Sag-C, BC(P), BC(L), SD(P))

I'm enough of a tech head to want to see how Haven approached that problem. Did they manage to squeeze their godaweful huge MDMs into something smaller than an SD(P)? Are they carrying ERMs of some kind? Relying on speed, stealth, and delayed missile ignition to fire SDMs from where they aren't? (seems least likely) Or more likely something I'm overlooking.

Plus of course I'd like to see this young captain; because interesting characters (whether new or somebody we've seen in passing before) are always fun.

Uh, I hate to say this, but it was Rose who jumped to the conclusion that this had to be a Republican officer. I never said that.

Just sayin'.

Sounds like the destroyer skipper is using SDM at extreme range. Likely delaying the drives from lighting off to hide her location better. Warheads sound like they are quite a bit more robust than the ones the RN had in the first Manty War. They would need to be kill RMN combatants with fewer hits an RN destroyer would expect to score.

She is dancing at the edge of more than one BC's effective range and using her guile and EW to snipe at them. Cheeky one, she is. Great big ovaries too!

Never said she wasn't, either.

Quite certainly, you 'never said that'. But your character was throwing around phrases like, "...my defenses are designed to stand up to Manticoran missile fire, aren't they?" - which does imply that the POV character is a Havenite. Oh, it could be a reference to internal testing of point defense systems, of course, or a "loaner" captaining an RHN ship, but the overall implication does seem to be "You idiot, my navy has gone toe-to-toe with the Manties, do you honestly think you can even scratch my paint?"

I look forward to having my assumptions thoroughly disproven in the full text of the novel. Preferably sooner rather than later.

To be honest rose, I didn't assimilate it exactly the same way as you did. But the opposite. I was thinking that Manticorans design their defenses to stand up to their own weight of fire -- since their weight of fire is the galaxies meter stick.

To be honest again, upon reading your post, I reread it and accepted your perception with a doh!

However, it does beg the question of whether a Manty ship can stand up to its own weight of fire -- in case of a rogue ship.

Err, yes. I suppose Manticoran (or Grayson or other Manticoran Alliance) ships would also be designed to stand up to Manticoran missile fire (that whole balanced design thing)

Ah well, guess we'll have to wait and see if we got our hopes up prematurely.

If I had to put my 2 cents on a wager, I'd guess we see a second example of how a certain Captain Amanda Belloc, CO of HMS Madelyn Hoffman, prefers to handle a situation ... At least it's a similar style.
