Cachat was staring at him, obviously in complete incomprehension. It was odd, the way such a supremely capable man could be so oblivious to his own stature. That was a feature of Victor that Anton found simultaneously attractive and rather scary. In the right (or wrong) circumstances, people with little in the way of egos—more precisely, little concern for their egos—could do…
Pretty much anything.

More Cachat badass resume endorsement. And when the reference is originating from a colleague, with the stature of Zilwicki, well...then...

Others are badasses. These two?, rather assbad!

What does attendance have to do with belief???

Given what we know about the Third Stellars from text and extrapolating from RFC's likely inspirations, I'd say the church services she is accustomed to resemble an in-home bible study more than anything else.

We know that they consider the individual personally responsible for their own connection to God. We know they facilitate this with services using a bare minimum of structure. We know that even among Third Stellars, the Harringtons belong to a branch even more dedicated to that basic personal responsibility, with plain services entirely lacking in "Fol-de-rol".
We know that there are no fundamental differences with the Church of Humanity.
We know that the Third Stellars, as a whole, are as independent minded a bunch as you will find.

I submit that one of their favorite Bible verses is probably Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three gather in my Name, there I am, among them."

Add in the traditions that RFC likely drew upon, and Honor could go to church with nothing more then a Bible and a couple friends. Maybe a candle, if they wanted to get fancy ;)

I suspect she might convert to the Greyson religion...

I wasn't aware that my highly sporadic church attendance somehow disqualified me from being an Anglican. (Seriously, the only two days of the year you are guaranteed to find me at church are Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday.) And yet somehow I still manage to be a relatively devout practitioner. Funny, that.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Honor did convert at some point. Tester knows I would given the first opportunity!!

The nice thing about being Angli-piscopal: All the ceremony, half the guilt ;)

I do have to give Mr. Weber credit when it comes to the Church of Humanity Unchained, generally when sci-fi authors create a religion, we end up with Tom Cruise...
The Greyson religion holds together well, and it's obviously something you COULD build a culture on, not just a mashup used to fill a need like some other books.

And no need to remember the rosary!

Seriously though, I couldn't agree more. It's a variant of Christian theology that makes total sense for the people who follow it. Like any religion, it has its flaws, but it's coherent, it's well-intentioned, and most importantly, it's something that could exist somewhere if only given the right triggers. That's a rare feat for an author, and I think it's one of the reasons I connected so strongly with Grayson - it feels real.

Indeed. In Flag in Exile, when Honor and the Grayson cleric (Merchant? Marchand?) were throwing quotes back and forth, I could see how the rest of St. Austins writings might go, and I was quite impressed. It's easy to look at the polygamy and general misogyny of Grayson's life and just stop there, writing it all off as an obvious plot device intended to contrast completely with Honor's upbringing. But the more you dig, the more you find, and even the flaws are ones that are known to us and society.

I mentioned it before. Forgive me for taking this opportunity to expound. It is not my intention to offend.

RFC's take on the Grayson religion, for me personally, represents hope. And it moves me to tears.

Hope is unleashed because of the removal of the chains of bondage, and allows the freedom, potential and opportunity to excel in one's higher beliefs.

The Church of Humanity Unchained.
Can't get any better than that.

Even The New Way reminds me of The New Testament.

Mark 5:4
Verse Concepts
because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.

Luke 8:29

For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.

Acts 12:6-7
On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison. And behold, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter's side and woke him up, saying, "Get up quickly." And his chains fell off his hands.

Jeremiah 40:1-4
The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan captain of the bodyguard had released him from Ramah, when he had taken him bound in chains among all the exiles of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon. Now the captain of the bodyguard had taken Jeremiah and said to him, "The LORD your God promised this calamity against this place; and the LORD has brought it on and done just as He promised. Because you people sinned against the LORD and did not listen to His voice, therefore this thing has happened to you.

Acts 16:26

and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were unfastened.

Acts 21:33

Then the commander came up and took hold of him, and ordered him to be bound with two chains; and he began asking who he was and what he had done.

Acts 22:29
Therefore those who were about to examine him immediately let go of him; and the commander also was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had put him in chains.

Acts 26:29

And Paul said, "I would wish to God, that whether in a short or long time, not only you, but also all who hear me this day, might become such as I am, except for these chains."

Acts 28:20

"For this reason, therefore, I requested to see you and to speak with you, for I am wearing this chain for the sake of the hope of Israel."

Ephesians 6:20

for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

2 Timothy 1:16

The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains;

Hebrews 11:36

and others experienced mockings and scourgings, yes, also chains and imprisonment.

Isaiah 45:14

Thus says the LORD, "The products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush And the Sabeans, men of stature, Will come over to you and will be yours; They will walk behind you, they will come over in chains And will bow down to you; They will make supplication to you: `Surely, God is with you, and there is none else, No other God.'"

Job 36:8-9

"And if they are bound in fetters, And are caught in the cords of affliction, Then He declares to them their work And their transgressions, that they have magnified themselves.

Psalms 2:3
"Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!"

Psalms 107:10-14
There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High. Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help.

Isaiah 28:22

And now do not carry on as scoffers, Or your fetters will be made stronger; For I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts Of decisive destruction on all the earth.

Isaiah 52:2

Shake yourself from the dust, rise up, O captive Jerusalem; Loose yourself from the chains around your neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

Ezekiel 7:23

`Make the chain, for the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence.

Nahum 3:10

Yet she became an exile, She went into captivity; Also her small children were dashed to pieces At the head of every street; They cast lots for her honorable men, And all her great men were bound with fetters.

Psalms 116:16
O LORD, surely I am Your servant, I am Your servant, the son of Your handmaid, You have loosed my bonds.

Isaiah 58:6-10
"Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free And break every yoke? "Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him; And not to hide yourself from your own flesh? "Then your light will break out like the dawn, And your recovery will speedily spring forth; And your righteousness will go before you; The glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

Lamentations 3:7

He has walled me in so that I cannot go out; He has made my chain heavy.

Revelation 20:1-2
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;

Exodus 28:22-25
"You shall make on the breastpiece chains of twisted cordage work in pure gold. "You shall make on the breastpiece two rings of gold, and shall put the two rings on the two ends of the breastpiece. "You shall put the two cords of gold on the two rings at the ends of the breastpiece.

Exodus 39:15-18
They made on the breastpiece chains like cords, of twisted cordage work in pure gold. They made two gold filigree settings and two gold rings, and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastpiece. Then they put the two gold cords in the two rings at the ends of the breastpiece.

2 Chronicles 3:16

He made chains in the inner sanctuary and placed them on the tops of the pillars; and he made one hundred pomegranates and placed them on the chains.

Jeremiah 40:3
and the LORD has brought it on and done just as He promised. Because you people sinned against the LORD and did not listen to His voice, therefore this thing has happened to you.
"But now, behold, I am freeing you today from the chains which are on your hands. If you would prefer to come with me to Babylon, come along, and I will look after you; but if you would prefer not to come with me to Babylon, never mind. Look, the whole land is before you; go wherever it seems good and right for you to go."

Revelation 20:1

Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand.

Colonel Nancy Anderson tapped her bottom teeth a few times with a thumbnail, in an unconscious mannerism that her subordinates had labeled grief-unto-others.

Had a teacher that used to tap her nails on her desk. It also meant grief-unto-others. :o

The Beowulfan military, like that of Manticore, was highly skeptical of the Solarian Navy’s reputation, especially that of Battle Fleet. Not so, however, of the Solarian Marines. Unlike Battle Fleet officers and crews, who could easily go through an entire career without seeing any combat at all, the Marines were a real fighting force.

Interesting. The Marines are better than the Navy.

Definitely "All things considered, Her Grace's plan may not have been the single rashest, most foolhardy, do-or-die, all-or-nothing throw of the dice in the history of the Royal Manticoran —- or Grayson -— Navy. If it wasn't, however, I have so far failed to find the plan that was."

Uroboros wrote:I think Ginger is a bad example. I think she'd do quite well as a warship captain, given some of her past examples of ingenuity. I think she's got a mind for tactics, even if she comes from the Engineering track.

In fact, given her promotion to Captain (JG) and her posting to the WDB, I'd say she could be in the works for her own ship. The tactical track isn't solely reserved for command, after all.

I think Ginger might make a good warship captain as well. Of course I'm slightly biased since Ginger is one of my top five recurring characters in the setting still breathing. Plus many of my favorite scifi ship captains started as engineers, and I've played a very large number of space navy captains and flag officers in various sci-fi RPG settings, most of whom either started their naval career on the engineering track, or had a high level of engineering training either before or during their military careers. Oh and one who was chief engineer, than XO than briefly captain of a privateer before joining a formal navy.
